There are lands that speak in low voices—whispers that slip through adobe walls, in sun-warmed stone that has watched generations pass, in the openings of a bell gable that still echo with the sound of holy days, storms, prayers and council calls… La Sobarriba, this quiet region northeast of the city of León, is one of those lands. Here, between the rivers Torío and Porma, time did not stop—it simply learned to beat to a different rhythm.

Here, between the rivers Torío and Porma, time did not stop—it simply learned to beat to a different rhythm.
For centuries, its villages—small, humble, resilient—sustained a way of life in which every dovecote, every forge, every carved stone in the chapel or parish church was a promise of continuity. Today, that heritage lies dormant in many corners, forgotten or barely preserved by the will of those who, in old age, remember history as if it were sewn into their souls.
This is why this project was born, led by the Fundación Proconsi—not just as a conservation initiative, but as an act of collective love for what we once were, and what we still might be. In this first phase, we focus closely on the municipality of Valdefresno and its 20 localities, with special attention to the northern area of the old Brotherhood of La Sobarriba: Carbajosa, Villacil, Villalboñe, and Santovenia del Monte.
There, where population density barely exceeds eight inhabitants per square kilometer, history still breathes: in a 17th-century parish cross, in the brown cloak of the Santa Eugenia brotherhood, in the trace of a banner that once waved on the day of the Vow to the Virgin of El Camino. And it is precisely there where we want to begin listening—carefully.
This project proposes to restore, document, and protect. But also to imagine and to narrate: because preserving heritage is not just about securing stones or restoring altarpieces, but about returning pride and meaning to the community’s roots. Through rigorous research, academic collaboration, and technological innovation, we aim to make La Sobarriba a living space of culture: a place where memory becomes encounter.
We want to train those who live here so they can become the future custodians of this heritage. We want to attract those who seek beauty in the details that don’t fit in tourist guides. We want the bells to ring once more—not just for liturgy, but to celebrate what endures.
We know it is no easy task: there are structures wounded by time, archives still unopened, silences that require patience. But we also know that this territory—modest in appearance, immense in history—deserves a future worthy of its past.
